Anchor Text
The text of the link. If your link is <a href=”https://www.seoperth.net.au”>Click Here</a> then the anchor text is “Click Here”.
Backlinks
All the web pages across the world wide web that link to a particular web page or domain are collectively called the “backlinks” of that particular web page or domain.
Citation
A citation, when used in an SEO context, is where a business’s Name, Address and Phone Number are mentioned on another website. This is thought to be a ranking factor for Google Maps.
H1 Tag
Gets a special mention because there should usually only be one per page. This should set the main topic of the web page in the same way a book title might.
Headings
Used for a better structure of a web page, for easier reading or better information flow. The html tags are <h1> (most important) through to <h6>.
Main Search Terms
The keywords that the majority of the business’s target customers are typing into Google to find businesses like theirs.
Link Building
The process of building links. This is where an SEO will spend most of his or her time. Often involves posting text, video or images on other websites, with a backlink to the money site or relevant tier.
Meta Title
The text between the <title> and </title> html tags. This usually appears in search results or in the browser tab.
Money Site
When talking about link building, your money site is the end target of all the tiers. It’s the one you primarily make money from (hence the name). If you do SEO for a local business, this will be their business website.
Tiering
Also known as levels. All the pages online that link to your money site are usually considered to be Tier 1. All the pages that link to Tier 1 are Tier 2, etc.
URL
Stands for “Universal Resource Locator”. It’s the address for a specific page on the web. For example, the URL for this page is https://seoperth.net.au/definitions/
